Reliable Power You Can Count On

Agreements with big load customers ensure their help to fund grid upgrades like substations and lines that support reliable service for homes and businesses.

Jobs for Our Communities

New projects bring economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening local communities.

Powering Progress

For more than 100 years, SWEPCO has delivered safe, reliable electricity to the homes and businesses that depend on us. Today, our region is growing and new large industrial customers, like data centers and advanced manufacturing, are choosing to invest here.

We have been proactively strengthening and expanding critical infrastructure to attract new customers while continuing to benefit the communities we already serve. To support this growth, we're strengthening and expanding critical infrastructure to support today's needs and the major economic investments of tomorrow. These upgrades boost reliability, improve resilience, and help keep costs as low as possible across all customer groups.

Here, you'll find clear information about how major new energy users, such as data centers, affect SWEPCO's electric system and what their arrival means for reliability, rates, and resiliency for our communities.

What Large New Energy Users Mean for You

As companies bring major investments and new jobs to our region, our commitment remains the same: delivering dependable energy at the lowest costs possible, to every customer.

FAQs

How Large Utility-Load Businesses Benefit Communities

Will attracting large businesses raise rates or affect reliability?

Amazon intends to pay 100% of its electricity costs to power its data centers so that these expenses are not subsidized by or passed on to other customers. SWEPCO is ready to serve every customer, including new large industrial customers, without increasing costs for existing customers. New businesses help strengthen the region by bringing more people to share the cost of maintaining the electric grid, which helps keep rates stable and service dependable. Economic growth is essential for our customers and the communities we are privileged to serve. SWEPCO has a long history of supporting development in our region, and that commitment remains strong. When new businesses come to town, it's good news for everyone: more jobs, stronger communities, and long term benefits that support reliable service for all.

What are data centers?

Data centers are basically big, secure buildings full of powerful computers that keep the digital world running. Every time you stream a movie, check email, shop online, back up photos, or use tools powered by artificial intelligence, you're connecting to a data center somewhere. Most people use data centers every day without even thinking about it. When a data center chooses to locate in our area, it doesn't just support those online services - it can also be good news for local utility customers. Large businesses use a lot of power, and that added demand helps spread the cost of maintaining the electric grid across more customers. That can help keep rates more stable for everyone while SWEPCO continues to invest in a reliable, resilient power system.

How will my bill be impacted as the result of economic growth?

These costs are covered by the project owner, not by you. This project means more jobs, more investment, and a stronger local economy without raising costs for current customers. SWEPCO, under the oversight of the Louisiana Public Service Commission, has agreements that ensure the new business pays for any facilities or upgrades it needs, such as substations, transmission lines, or specialized equipment.

What if a company selects the area but later shutters the site or relocates to another location?

If they leave the site or relocate, the power equipment stays. It can be used to help other customers and keep the grid strong. While these projects often need specialized infrastructure, the good news is SWEPCO's agreements require the incoming customer to pay for the infrastructure it needs to become a SWEPCO customer.

We're replacing 21,000+ poles with stronger materials to withstand severe weather.

  • 1,800 poles already replaced
  • Project spans Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas
  • Designed for long-term durability and reliability
  • As our grid continues to grow knowing our infrastructure is the most up to date helps us all be ready for what's next.
Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming for Reliability

Our vegetation management program trims trees near power lines to reduce outages and storm damage.

  • 200 crews working across our service area
  • Every customer benefits—even if you don't see crews nearby
  • Proactive trimming keeps growth moving in the right direction
Smart Meters

Smart Meters: Power in Your Hands

Smart meters give you more control over energy use and help us restore power faster.

  • Secure, two-way communication for accurate readings
  • Real-time outage alerts to speed restoration
  • Personalized energy tips based on your usage
Transmission

As a part of AEP, we're connected to the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a network spanning more than 40,000 miles, and features the most 765-kilovolt extra-high voltage lines of any U.S. transmission system.

These investments help ensure safe, efficient delivery of power today while preparing for the energy demands of tomorrow.
