Celebrating National Bird Day at SWEPCO's Eagle Watch Nature Trail

January 5, 2024

Photo by Terry Stanfill, the former SWEPCO chemist who was the driving force behind the development of the Eagle Watch Nature Trail. One of the on-site pavilions is named in Stanfill's memory, following his passing in 2021. He was a nature lover and talented wildlife photographer.

GENTRY, Ark.—As we celebrate National Bird Day, it's an honor to invite you all to experience the natural splendor of SWEPCO's Eagle Watch Nature Trail in Gentry, Arkansas. Nestled in Flint Creek Power Plant’s landscape, this trail is not just a testament to SWEPCO’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also a haven for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

The Eagle Watch Nature Trail is a serene wildlife oasis that offers a unique opportunity to witness a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. The highlight, depending on the season, is the chance to observe the majestic bald eagle, America's national bird, in its natural environment. At least 144 bird species have been spotted at the Eagle Watch Nature Trail. Take a look at the printable?bird species checklist. It’s a great guide to take along your hike to see how many bird species you can see.

National Bird Day, observed every Jan. 5, is more than just an appreciation of birds' beauty and diversity. It's a day that emphasizes the importance of protecting these creatures and their habitats. It's a day to reflect on the role birds play in our ecosystem and how we, as a community, can contribute to their conservation.

What to Expect at the Eagle Watch Nature Trail

1. Breathtaking Birdwatching: The trail offers an unrivaled birdwatching experience. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a curious newbie, the variety of species found here is sure to amaze you.

2. Educational Insights: We've partnered with local bird experts to provide informative signposts along the trail. These snippets of knowledge enhance your visit by offering fascinating insights about the birds you're observing.

3. Photographer's Paradise: Don’t forget your camera! Whether you are a pro or just getting your feet wet in photography, the trail presents countless photographic opportunities to capture beautiful birds and scenic landscapes alike.

4. Community Connections: Join us in our volunteer activities. From habitat maintenance to educational outreach, there's always an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our feathered friends.

We encourage you to visit the Eagle Watch Nature Trail, not just on National Bird Day but throughout the year. While you’re there, let us know where you’re traveling from by filling out a visitor card at one of the pavilions.
