Some of the most meaningful community connections happen one smile, one horseback ride and one shared experience at a time.

That was certainly the case at the 25th Annual Polk County Handicapable Rodeo in Mena, Arkansas, where SWEPCO employees volunteered alongside community members to help create a special day for approximately 50 participants from Polk County and surrounding areas.

Held in conjunction with the Polk County Rodeo, the event gives children and adults with physical and developmental challenges the opportunity to enjoy activities they may not otherwise have access to, including horse and mule rides, hayrides, roping lessons and hands-on interaction with animals.

For SWEPCO volunteers, the day was all about making connections and creating memorable experiences.

A special shoutout goes to Rob, troubleman from the Rogers Dock, who brought two of his mules for participants to pet, ride and feed throughout the day. The mules quickly became crowd favorites as participants enjoyed getting up close to the animals and offering treats from saddlebags Rob filled with carrots, peaches and peppermints.

Festus, senior lineman in Mena, brought one of his horses to provide rides and, along with his sons, taught participants basic roping skills. Their patience and encouragement helped participants experience a classic rodeo tradition firsthand.

Other SWEPCO volunteers included Rusty, Key Accounts Manager for the Fayetteville District; Sean, Distribution System Supervisor for the Greenwood Dock; and Greenwood lineman Hunter.

"It was inspiring to see the power of community in action as volunteers provided horseback rides, hayrides, a petting zoo and roping lessons for area residents who may not otherwise have those opportunities because of physical or developmental challenges," said Amy Schlesing, SWEPCO External Affairs Manager. "I want to give a big thanks to Festus Wimberly, our senior lineman in Mena, who recommended our SWEPCO team sponsor and join him as volunteers at this special annual event."

For the volunteers, the greatest reward was seeing participants laugh, learn new skills and spend time with the animals. For the participants and their families, it was a day filled with fun, friendship and memories.

Events like the Polk County Handicapable Rodeo are a reminder that serving a community goes beyond providing electricity. It's about showing up, lending a hand and helping create moments that matter. SWEPCO is proud of the employees who dedicated their time and energy to making this special tradition a success for a 25th year.
