As new technologies and evolving weather threats create additional challenges for emergency responders, opportunities to learn and collaborate are more important than ever. SWEPCO helped support those efforts by sponsoring the Arkansas River Valley Regional Emergency Preparedness Committee July 16 meeting in Fort Smith, bringing together more than 50 emergency preparedness professionals from across the region.

The Arkansas River Valley Regional Emergency Preparedness Committee connects first responders, industry safety managers, city leaders and county emergency managers to share resources, discuss emerging challenges and identify training opportunities that strengthen regional preparedness.

The quarterly meeting provided attendees with valuable networking opportunities and an open forum for exchanging ideas and best practices.

As part of the program, James Depew, customer experience account manager, shared important safety information related to responding to fires involving structures equipped with solar panels. As solar energy adoption continues to grow, homes and businesses with solar installations can present unique challenges for firefighters and first responders due to panel placement, electrical components and wiring configurations.

"As the use of solar energy continues to expand, it's important that first responders understand the unique hazards these systems can present during an emergency," Depew said. "Meetings like this give us an opportunity to share knowledge, answer questions and support the men and women who work every day to keep our communities safe."

He also provided guidance on identifying downed power lines hidden in brush and debris following storms, along with safety tips designed to help emergency personnel protect themselves and the public while responding to storm-related incidents.

In addition to Depew's presentation, SWEPCO representatives Katie Poston, customer services account representative and Sean Kelley, distribution system supervisor engaged with attendees throughout the meeting, answering questions and discussing utility safety and emergency response coordination.
